The Islands also grow seed for mainland farmers from transgenic crops that are engineered to produce their own insecticides or resist herbicides. So far, the government has approved transgenic varieties of soybeans, corn, canola, sugar beets, zucchini, crookneck squash and papaya, which means that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are widely present in our food supply.Jeffrey Smith recently toured Hawaii speaking on the dangers of Genetically Modified plants in food products and open field testing.

ft DeRussy Biathlon  LogoThe Hale Koa Hotel AFRC proudly presents the 11th Annual Ft.DeRussy Biathlon and Keiki Run-Swim-Run Event. This event offers two types of adult races and keiki races with distances determined by age.

It’s a great way to spend the morning, get fit and stay healthy.  In addition to the race we host a variety of companies and services that assist in keeping you healthy. Join our host Mental Mele from 98.5 our sponsors Midweek/Star bulletin, Coca Cola, Jamba Juice, Niketown, Hawaii Youth Triathlon Club, MeadowGold, Sun Planet, Aqua Sphere, and Hawaii Health Guide!

Long Course: 5K Run followed by 1K Swim
Short Course: 2.5K Run followed by 500m Swim
All races start and finish on Fort DeRussy Beach with the entire race with in the Fort DeRussy property.

There will be awards for the following male/female groups:
Individual:
Elite, Military, 14 & under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-39, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80 and older
Relay: Men, Women, Mixed and Masters (Participants must be 45 years or older to qualify as Master)

What Is Angina?Here is an overview of Angina including symptoms, cause, treatment, prevention, diet and health tips.Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when your heart muscle does not get enough blood. Angina may feel like pressure or a squeezing pain in your chest. The pain may also occur in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. It may also feel like indigestion.Angina is a symptom of coronary artery disease (CAD), the most common type of heart disease. CAD occurs when plaque builds up in the coronary arteries. This buildup of plaque is called atherosclerosis. As plaque builds up, the coronary arteries become narrow and stiff. Blood flow to the heart is reduced. This decreases the oxygen supply to the heart muscle.

3rd Annual Hawaii Avocado Festival

The 3rd Annual Hawaii Avocado Festival will be held February 21, 2009, at Amy BH Greenwell Ethno-botanical Garden on Captain Cook. Festivities start at 9:00 am and run to 6:00pm, with Live Music and Entertainment, local vendors, Farmer’s Market, Arts & Crafts, keiki games, agricultural displays, lectures, demos, etc. There will be Free Guacamole!!! Fresh Fruits, Juices, Organic Foods and Kava drinks offered by the Sanctuary of Mana Ke’a Gardens

1st Place Prizes for: Best Guacamole, Best Dessert, Best Recipe. All recipes available for tasting after judging.

"The Hawaii Avocado Festival is a great way to learn about all the wonderful healthful ways to enjoy the selection of avocado’s in Hawaii" said event coordinator Randyl Rupar. " You’ll be amazed at the different tastes and uses of many varieties grown here in Hawaii".
