Ocean Acidification

Since the industrial revolution began about 200 years ago, carbon dioxide released from burning fossil fuels and the production of cement has been released into the atmosphere and absorbed by our oceans. The marine uptake of carbon dioxide has caused a 30% increase in the concentration of hydrogen ions leading to a reduction in surface seawater pH. If current fuel consumption trends continue there will be a 3 fold increase by 2100. Ocean acidification is happening in addition to, and could potentially intensify, global climate change.Action needs to be taken now to reduce this rate as much as possible. We can help by cutting our own carbon emissions. Carpool, drive less, hang clothes on the line, eat less meat, buy local, go solar! The ways you can help are endless!
